Bio-Based Sustainable Coatings for Paper Food & Beverage Packaging

Bio-Based Sustainable Coatings for Paper Food & Beverage Packaging

What are bio-based sustainable coatings, and why should you care? Bio-based coatings are more sustainable than PE or PLA linings, which is why it’s important to understand these biodegradable polymer products. To help you better understand bio-based sustainable coatings, we will look deeper at plastic-based vs. PLA and other coatings used in food packaging. In the end, you will understand why your food packaging choices matter.

What are Bio-Based Coatings & Why Use It on Paper Packaging Products?

Bio-based sustainable coatings are biodegradable polymers. This bio-plastic substance decomposes into carbon dioxide and water when under the soil. Due to this, paper packaging is absolutely a more sustainable option than any plastic alternative. If you want to use them with liquids or with “wet” food applications, you will need to waterproof coating. Typically, those coatings have been made with plastics. While that gives you the waterproof barrier you need it essentially turns your paper cup (or package) into a plastic product. It’s no longer recyclable and won’t break down in the ocean. Bio-based coatings used on paper packaging products are waterproof, sustainable, recyclable, compostable, and bio-degradable.

Why Greener Shapes’ Bio-Based Coatings are a More Sustainable Option

We use new bio-based coatings on all of our paper products. Unlike other bio-based coatings, our products are both industrial compostable and recyclable. Our biodegradable and compostable polymers offer superior processability and excellent adhesion to paper. Plus, the heat-resistant biodegradable coatings remain stable up to 239 degrees Fahrenheit. And with a high degree of repulpability, our products are also recyclable in your curbside bin.

Bio-Based Coatings vs. PE or PLA Linings

The PE film is not often recyclable, but other companies often use PE linings on their paper coffee or beverage cups. PLA has become a popular bio-based coating. Unfortunately, it has proven to be a contaminant in the recycle stream. Because Greener Shapes’ sustainable bio-based coatings can be recycled, repulped, or composted, they are superior to both PE or PLA linings.
